Tips for great reference photos
I work from photos, so no need to see the pet in person. For a painting with more than one pet, I can create a composition from multiple photos, eliminating the struggle of getting everyone in the photo.
Some tips below are what I'm looking for in a great reference photo. However, sometimes it's not possible and that's okay. I often work from old photos and use a little creative license to craft your portrait.

Taken at eye level

Close-up (3-6 feet away)

Clear & Sharp

Outdoor photos are best

No flash indoors = no red eye

Watch the shadows
